Futurism: The True Theme of Game of Thrones

For those who have ever seen the television phenomenon, Game of Thrones, they could give you a brief spoil-free synopsis of the show by saying the plot revolves around determined characters who question the past systematic process of who will be the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. No matter who has a successful quest at the end of each episode or season, all contenders are seeking a better future for their people. Similar to the actual era of futurism which was an art movement in art, music, and literature glorifying the future and utilizing these mediums to promote movement within work to emphasize that futurists were not going back! Game of Thronesportrays this theme of futurism through their plot set design, and even within their opening credits.

If you haven’t seen the television series, watching the 2-minute opening credit scene could foreshadow a futurism theme. Going through the five senses, first, you hear an orchestra buildup of violins raising anxiety levels as the viewer is wondering what will be seen next. Visually, the mechanic overview of all the castles is an example of mechanical energy and change and drive to break free from modern life. An example of art from the futurism movement can also relate to Analytic Cubism. Here in these opening credits alone are a window into the shows futurism influence.

To dig a little deeper, the opening scenes in Game of Thrones represent Analytic Cubism.  Two prime artists known for their work in this field are Picasso and Braque. Analytic cubism breaks abstraction into geometric planes and the normal natural forms of nature are broken down. There is a balance between the foreground and background resulting in the flattened perspective. Seeing these artists work and comparing it to screenshots of just the opening credits sets the show up to see the theme of this story that is telling the audience that these characters have no place to go but forward.
Watching this show before learning about this era in Art History, I would appreciate the mechanical functions of each style portrayed throughout the series yet, the true meaning would be lost. Essentially, if one has extensive knowledge of this era in history, an artist could predict the most unpredictable show on television.
